How to clean manual can opener without rusting it?
Okay, this probably seems like a dumb question, but I have to buy a new manual can opener at least once per year because they get rusted and stop working. Someone told me once that you are not supposed to wash can openers, just wipe them off or something so they don’t rust. Is that true, it doesn’t seem very sanitary?

They can be washed and rinsed in very hot water and dried with a dish towel.
Buy a better one. It won’t rust.
If it’s not plated or stainless steel that is a problem. Actually you should wash them but do not wash them in the dishwasher or leave them in water. If it is the old style with the blade on top then if it gets dirty then when you cut a can the dirt gets on the food in the can. May not hurt but I don’t like the thought of that. So you have to wash them I feel.
What you can do is wash it then dry it good and then put a little Mineral oil on the surfaces. This is a food safe oil and will help with the rust and keep it lubricated too.
The best solution is to buy a better opener. I use a side cutting opener. You don’t have to worry about cleaning it so much as the blade never gets to the food. Plus it will open the can and you don’t get cut removing the top and if needed you can put the top back on and put it in the fridge for a few days.
I have had my latest which is not really all that good for 5 year. I got it at Walmart. In any case they are probably going to be hand wash only but I have put mine in the washer on occasion. If I had to buy another I’d buy a OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener.
